Colouring is just for kids, right? Wrong! Colouring is for everyone!
Adult colouring books are a THING, from intricate mandalas, to classic books (like Dracula), to your favorite cartoon characters! And they are purposely designed to reduce stress.
Personally, I love colouring, and I likely own more colouring books than most people. It’s such a calming experience, and the perfect time to clear your mind. I now understand why my mom would set us aside with a colouring book and a big box of pencil crayons.
There aren’t many studies done on colouring and it’s stress relieving affects. However, psychologist Carl Jung had his patients colouring mandalas over 100 years ago for relaxation as well as a tool for self-discovery. That has to prove something right? There was one study done on college students that found the students colouring had significantly reduced signs of stress and depression.
But what does colouring have to do with Adult Source? Well, we aren’t just a sex toy superstore, we’re also the king of smokecessories in Calgary- and among our smokecessories selection, you’ll find a wide array of colouring books. Because what is better than getting high and zoning out on some colouring books?
In keeping in trend with our Summer of Self Care, why not grab yourself a book and settle in to enjoy some of these benefits:
- Reduced stress, anxiety and depression- Colouring has the ability to relax the fear center in your brain, the amygdala. This can lead to the same zen state you receive from meditation. It also creates quietness which allows your brain to rest, and let’s face it, we all need to let our brains relax a little right now. Since Covid started it has been on the forefront of all our minds.
- Improved motor skills and vision- On top of relaxing your brain, colouring makes the two hemispheres of your brain communicate better with one another.
- Improved Sleep- Living in the technological age has some disadvantages. One of those disadvantages being that we are perpetually surrounded by Wifi and electronic devices. This can wreak havoc on our sleep schedules. Avoiding electronics at night can help our brains wind down and prepare for sleep. If you’re not quite ready for bed, grab your colouring book and finish one page. It’s will help you to sleep better, while practicing better sleep hygiene.
- Improved Focus- Colouring helps open up your frontal lobe which controls your organization and problem solving. What this does is allow you to ignore everything else on your plate for a little bit and just focus on colouring inside the lines- or not.. what ever you want.
With all the possible benefits of colouring, what do you really have to lose? Invest in your mental health and take some time to focus on yourself, that is what the Summer of Self Love is all about. Give your brain a little escape and get out those pencil crayons!
